How to Enable WebGL in Firefox

Having trouble launching a simulation? It might be because WebGL is disabled in your Firefox browser. This guide will walk you through how to check, enable, and troubleshoot WebGL so everything runs smoothly.

🧠 What is WebGL?

WebGL (Web Graphics Library) allows your browser to render 3D simulations and graphics — essential for running Interplay Learning simulations.

✅ Quick Check: Is WebGL Enabled?

If WebGL Is Not Working...

Step 1: Update Firefox

Make sure you’re using the latest version of Firefox. WebGL is typically enabled by default in up-to-date versions.

Step 2: Try a Different Browser or Device

If updating doesn't help, try another supported browser (like Chrome, Edge, or Safari) or a different device. See our Supported Browsers.

Step 3: Enable Hardware Acceleration in Firefox

  1. Open Firefox.

  2. Click the menu icon (☰) and select Settings.

  3. Under the General tab, scroll to the Performance section.

  4. Make sure “Use recommended performance settings” is checked.

    • If it’s unchecked, manually check “Use hardware acceleration when available.”

Step 5: Inspect WebGL Status

  1. In a new Firefox tab, type: about:support

  2. Scroll to the Graphics section.

  3. Look for WebGL 2 Renderer:

    • ✅ If it shows your graphics card (e.g., “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050”), WebGL is enabled.

    • ❌ If it says "Blocked" or lists driver issues, your graphics card or driver may be unsupported or blacklisted.
